The Basic Drilling Technology training course provides an in-depth understanding of exploration well drilling. The programme focuses on modern, cost-effective drilling techniques while explaining how a field is thoroughly evaluated. Topics include estimating hydrocarbon volumes, assessing drive mechanisms, and anticipating formation pressures, all of which form the foundation for a field development plan.

Participants will also learn how to estimate cash flow, capital expenditures, and operating costs based on the drilling sequence and production tests. If the economic assessment indicates profitability, the field is considered commercially viable and ready for development.

Objective

• Understand the differences between onshore and offshore drilling and their impact on well costs

• Recognise inherent drilling risks and the importance of timely diagnostics and supervised actions for safe operations

• Explain the potential challenges and implications of drilling in high-pressure zones

• Select appropriate drilling fluids for each section of the well

• Understand the role and services of mud logging

• Identify and describe surface drilling equipment requirements, including BOPs, drilling platforms, and accessories
